Billinge Beacon Tower

A popular walking location with spectacular views, Billinge Hill or Billinge Lump is the highest point in St Helens Borough and includes a structure referred to as 'Billinge Beacon Tower'.

The structure was built in 1788 by the Bankes family who at that time inhabited Winstanley Hall and was designed to be a ‘belvedere’ (summer house) for the family and their friends, the original structure included a pitched roof with a chimney stack.

The area was used as a Royal Observer Corps (ROC) from 1960-1968 as a Cold War surveillance site, some of the surface structures are still visible today.
