Copper Slag. Sutton. St Helens.
Sutton, May 2025
Credit: Philip Wilkinson
Copper slag found at Moss Nook in Sutton. St Helens.
The waste products from smelting was sometimes used as railway ballast. These artefacts were dug out of the ground on the old Sutton Oak railway line. They are now part of my found objects collection. They are quite old (possible over 150 years) as they would have been used when the railway lines were constructed and the nearest smelter close to the find would be the Sutton Copper Works on Worsley Brow, Sutton.
