The QE2 was the last major order completed by John Roby Ltd., Rainhill before the company's closure. The Queen Elizabeth ll was an ocean liner built by John Brown and Co. Ltd., Clydebank for Cunard over five years of industrial unrest and financial difficulties. She was intended for travel between Southampton and New York but also undertook regular world cruises and was requisitioned as a troop ship in 1982 during the Falklands War. She was the Cunard flagship from 1969 to 2004 and the largest operational passenger ship in the world between 1974 and 1980. She became Cunard's longest serving express liner in 2004 and retired in 2008 having sailed 5.6 million miles and carried 2.5 million passengers. She was moved to Dubai and, although there were rumours of a return to Liverpool in 2011 or to London or Scotland in 2015, she opened as a floating hotel and heritage attraction in Dubai in 2018.
