In 1952 John Brown and Co. Ltd., Clydebank accepted John Roby Ltd.'s quote to supply sidelights, dead lights and fixed lights and sliding windows for vessel 691 which was to be the new Royal Yacht. Britannia was designed to be converted to a hospital ship or a refuge for the Royal Family in time of war. Her maiden voyage was from Portsmouth to Malta carrying Prince Charles and Princess Anne to meet their parents at the end of their Coronation Tour. Queen Elizabeth ll embarked on May 1st 1954 at Tobruk. This ship has provided hospitality for four US Presidents, was used for the honeymoon of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1981 and regularly accommodated the Queen and her family for summer tours of the Western Isles. She was decommissioned on 11 December 1997 having travelled 1,087,623 nautical miles on 968 official visits, calling at 600 ports in 135 countries. Britannia is listed on the National Historic Ships Register and remains a visitor attraction at Leith.
