Monte Rosa was built as a passenger liner in Germany in 1930, requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in 1940 and deployed as a barracks ship, a troop ship, a repair ship and a hospital ship during World War ll. She was taken as a prize of war in 1945, allocated to the UK government and refitted for use as a troop ship in 1946 at Alexander Stephen, Glasgow. Renamed Empire Windrush in 1947 she became famous for transporting Caribbean immigrants to the UK in 1948. The Roby Foundry in Rainhill supplied two double brass sidelights with hinged deadlights when repairs were carried out by Harland and Wolff in 1950. Empire Windrush sank after an accidental fire in 1954 with the loss of four lives.
