The Roby Foundry in Rainhill supplied orders to R and W Hawthorn, Leslie and Co. Ltd for this V Class Destroyer which was completed in 1917. Verdun served with the Grand Fleet during World War l and was present at the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet. On November 10th 1920 Verdun escorted the coffin of the Unknown Soldier from Boulogne to Dover for onward transport to Westminster Abbey for burial there on November 11th. During World War ll she served again but as an anti aircraft escort and was adopted by Hoylake after the 'Warship Week' campaign. No longer needed after VE Day, Verdun was scrapped in 1946.
