Cunard appointed John Brown and Co. Ltd., Clydebank to build their new ship in 1930 and a substantial order for sidelights and windows was placed with Thomas Utley and Co. of Tuebrook. The Depression brought work to a halt in 1931 with serious consequences for suppliers: Thomas Utley and Co. went into receivership and John Roby Ltd. of Rainhill bought the company name and machinery and created the subsidiary company Thomas Utley (Rainhill) Ltd to continue the manufacture of Utley designs at the Roby Foundry in Rainhill. Eventually work on the ship was completed and a souvenir brochure of products made in Rainhill was produced. The Queen Mary went on to become a much celebrated ocean liner know for speed records crossing the Atlantic, luxurious accommodation, celebrity passengers and war service as the 'Grey Ghost'. Retired to Long Beach, California in 1967 she is currently a hotel and tourist attraction and appeared on screen in the 2023 film "Haunting of the Queen Mary'.
